If you are looking for a rustic finish to your countertop or floor, slate and soapstone are the right materials for you. Slate comes in slabs and is primarily black; there are occasionally green slabs. Slate tiles are available in black, red, purple, mottled and gray. Slate can have a honed or a natural cleft finish.
Soapstone comes in slabs, and can be used only for countertops. It has a bluish-green color and is available with a honed finish only.

A honed surface is a smooth, unpolished surface. Natural cleft is the remaining surface of a stone that is cleaved or separated along a natural seam.
